(3/3) Our planting plans are a little bit different than conventional landscape architecture drawings. We use colored symbols for each plant species. The color is a specific hue that is extracted from a photo of each plant. That way, it not only shows plant placement information, but also accurate color relationships in the landscape.

Long-horned bees (melissodes spp.) are native to the Willamette Valley and males are differentiated with long antennae. They're normally solitary, ground-nesting species but occasionally rest together on flower seed heads. They're also important fruit pollinators, and planting Blanketflower (Gaillardia aristata) next to Blueberries might help ensure good pollination and yields.

There is always something special to find when you garden with wildlife.

In order to treat invasive weeds more sustainably, we need to invest in understanding their growth strategies better. We frequently test Himalayan Blackberry leaves with handheld sap meters, and conduct professional sap analysis and soil tests with our lab partners. This allows us to learn about plant physiology, and work towards developing new, scalable treatment methods that target critical junctions in the plant's life cycle. It is our hope that these methods will help reduce or eliminate herbicide usage on habitat restoration projects, by providing a more strategic and sustainable solution.

Metzger Park, one of Washington County's flagship green spaces, is in the process of adding thousands of native plants for urban habitat restoration. We are thrilled to be a project partner with @washingtoncountyor and @tualatinswcd for the design of several new native planting beds.
